Ghana
The GAIN Foundation supported the establishment of the Nyanyano and Elmina Salt Cooperative with the technical input of external consultants, three of whom are members of SPBS.
The main goal was to ensure that small producers, organized in a cooperative open to all salt producers, could adequately iodize their salt before selling it. Members, board members and staff were trained, specific business model was designed and the cooperatives were formally registered.

Kyrgyzstan
In 2010, together with the GAIN Foundation SPBS’s member helped centralize procurement of Potassium Iodate (KIO3) across industry partners through a partnership established with the Kyrgyz Association of Salt Producers (KASP) to optimize procurement and costs associated with salt iodization.

Philippines
The GAIN Foundation assisted in the establishment of the Tamaraw Salt Producers Cooperative in Occidental Mindoro. Three members of SPBS were the consultants who were assigned to this job.
The project consisted in helping members organize and register their cooperative as well as building their capacity to collectively produce and distribute salt adequately fortified with iodine. Occidental Mindoro is a major salt-producing province with about 3,500 salt farmers.

Guinee Bissau
UNICEF’s project was to support the production of quality iodized salt. The approach was to engage with as many salt associations as possible and train staff in the daily management and production of quality iodized salt as per national standards. For each association, a manual containing the basic procedures needed to produce quality iodized salt was edited.

Madagascar
In the framework of UNICEF USI program, it appeared that small salt farmers were not participating in the USI project. As a result, the concept of a salt bank was established in Monrodava on the West coast.
In 2018 trainings on adequate iodized salt production took place and quality control manuals were provided to the government and the salt bank. The main challenge was to bring competing salt producers around the table in order to mutualize the iodization equipment.

Dominican Republic
Having visited the Monte Cristi salt production site in 1999, SPBS was contacted by the private salt producer Acra Agroindustrial Srl. An inception report was produced with the goal to support AAS to expand its operations from salt production and selling in bulk, to a salt washing and refining plant to target the retail consumer market segment.
